Student body has a high ratio of honor roll students and many teachers give off-the-clock time to tutor students toward success. The arts are actually taught rather than just passed through and Gateway, Discoveries and TAP for various disciplines is offered. School- or parent-sponsored extracurricular activities include choir, orchestra, football, cheerleading, Gator Girls spirit Squad, mascot and running club. The building is currently (2011) being renewed with paint throughout and a new terracotta tile roof with copper gutters and flashing - required because of its status on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1929, central air/heat was retrofitted in 2010. The school shares property with a city park that includes Louisiana's first right-to-play handicapped accessible playground. The park is closed to the public during school hours. The level of parent involvement is exceptional with a superior and award-winning PTA.
