School Reviews
5   11/4/2007
Glastonbury High School has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years. What once used to be an overcrowded construction zone, is now one of the most advanced public schools in Hartford county. The school now has a brand new science center and has completed a full renovation of the entire building. A new artificial turf field and track have been added and sports facilities have been upgraded across the board. Glastonbury sends 75% of its students to 4 year colleges and generally has a very competitive academic system. The median gpa in this school is a 3.5 so expect to work hard to gain any degree of class rank. Music theory and band, jazz band, just about everything is available. A brand new music lab has also been constructed with new keyboards and mixing equipment. The soccer program here is top notch as are several other sports. Nearly half the student body participates in sports and it really does show (there's not many obese people here). There is a new robotics club, there's key club, fbla, gay straight alliance, india club, asian club, international music club, debate team, math club, computer club, just about any club you can name. Due to its a giant student body, there's nothing thats not available to ghs students. Honestly though, the great thing about ghs is the facilities. The new science wing has classrooms with 6 lcd monitors with wireless keyboards and individual lab stations (8-10)per room. Each classroom within the school has an lcd projector and screen for teacher and student presentation use. The school also has a state of the art tv studio for students to produce material with. This school is completely airconditioned and temperature regulated now, so no more cold winters and hot summers, just a constant room temperature. The town of glastonbury invests about 66% or 2 thirds of its revenue into the education system, and it really does show. Teachers are excellent, the history dept in particular has an amazing mix of teachers. The only downside to having such a large school is the sometimes impersonal nature of the school. Its not one of those schools where everybody knows everyone. But I have to hand it to the administration for making students feel like they're in a smaller school by providing a plethora of counseling options and teacher interaction. GHS's programs are extremely respected by colleges, we send more kids to Ivy's than the majority of surround prep schools. Again, a student has to be talented to make it big here. This isn't exactly a place where a student can grow athletically, since everyone is so competitive. But if you plan on having your child make it to a good college, ghs is an excellent option.
