Model Laboratory School is a semi-private laboratory school located
on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University, in Richmond,
Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1906 when EKU was
strictly a teacher's college, and is now home to students in grades
pre-k through 12. Enrollment is open to the public, but there is a
strict limit as to the number of students per grade level along
with a fee for tuition. Model consistently ranks among the top 10%
of schools in Kentucky in regards to the state's accountablilty
testing system (KATS) and provides an opportunity for future
teachers from EKU's College of Education to gain valuable
experience in a real classroom environment. Since 1960, Model has
been housed in the Donovan Building, named for Dr. Herman Lee
Donovan the president of the university from 1928 to 1941. The
school's mascot was formerly the Rebels, but was changed to the
Patriots by the student council in 1973. Model is also the only
laboratory school in the state of Kentucky.
Model offers a wide variety of athletics including swimming,
diving, tennis, golf, soccer, baseball, basketball, softball,
track, and cross-sountry. Model also has many clubs and
organizations available to its students including one of the oldest
Key Clubs in the country.
Eastern Kentucky University and Model Laboratory School both
celebrated their centennial anniversiaries in 2006.
