The quality and availability of academic programs and extracurricular activities is outstanding. There is a variety of sports and classes, along with the distinguished IB program and the unique Native Speakers Spanish courses. But sure, the facilities definitely need an upgrade, the general appearance of the school does not match it's elite magnet school status. The books in some classes are few, and the remaining, torn. The coursework is challenging, and even overwhelming at points. But, speaking as a senior graduating this year, I have to say it was worth it. It is a real accomplishment making it so far in such a rigorous college prep high school. The expectations are high, almost unrealistically, but the teachers are helpful and tutoring is also available. The students are very focused, so study-groups are definitely an option. I am in the Certificate IB program (which is like HALF IB, as compared to FULL Diploma IB), and it is definitely a challenge, but I look forward to graduating from this amazing school with the academic qualities it takes to succeed in college.

The quality of academic programs are excellent. However, the expectations of the students from some of the teachers are unrealistic. Some teachers feel that students should take responsibility to ask for academic assistance when needed and I agree. Some will make assumptions about students without explanation and become overly critical and stereotype a student and punish them. Some will also focus more on their status instead of genuine concern for the student's confusion in their teaching style. Some teachers choose not to call parents when students are having difficulty or failing. This is UNACCEPTABLE!!!! Many of the teachers are excellent in their teaching skils and support of the students. There are plenty of quality arts, sports and other extracurricular activities. The facilities could use an upgrade and they are lacking in having enough textbooks for the students for several classes. Parent involvement is average to above average. The school is only as good as it's instructors and administration.
