known, West Shore, is a secondary school located at 250 Wildcat
Alley in Melbourne, Florida. It is the first 'School of Choice' in
Brevard County, Florida. Located in the city of Melbourne, Florida,
West Shore aims to deliver quality education to students from
grades seven through twelve, and help these children to fulfill the
school's motto, "Excellence Achieved."
Enrollment: As a public school, West Shore accepts any
student who has met minimum academic and social expectations set by
the school, provided there is space available. If there are more
students interested in the school than is space available, a
lottery is held to determine acceptance.
Highlights: West Shore is unique in several areas,
highlighted below: The Maximum enrollment for all grades is capped
at 950 students, in an effort to keep class sizes small.
Students are accepted from across the county. However, most
students enrolled reside in southern Brevard county, mainly
Melbourne, Palm Bay, Rockledge, West Melbourne and the Melbourne
barrier island beachside.
Graduation requirements are increased from the minimum set by the
county, with the addition of two extra credits, leadership in one
or more areas or projects, 80 hours total of documented volunteer
work, two completed areas of accelerated study with either Advanced
Placement classes or Dual Enrollment at the local community
college, eligibility for at least one post secondary scholarship,
and completion of a senior project (similar to a senior thesis).
Activity period once a week, providing for the development of clubs
and organizations.
Dress code (no torn or ripped clothing, please).
Student Publications: The Roar is the student run newspaper
published almost monthly. The Roar is designed, written, and
published by students in the Newspaper class.
Alter Ego is the high shool literary mag, commonly shortened to the
lit mag. It contains poetry, prose, and artwork entirely produced
by West Shore students.

Advanced Placement courses: Calculus, Statistics, United States
History, World History, American Government, English Literature,
English Language, Spanish, French, Chemistry, Computer Science,
Biology, and Music Theory.
Theatrical Productions: The drama department has put on productions

Dracula; A Midsummer's Night Dream; Broadway Bound (a collection of
musical pieces and scenes from various Broadway musicals); A Night

Both Boy's Soccer and Girl's Golf teams have been District

West Shore is excellent for the right person, yet fails many. Anyone interested in extracurricular activities outside of quick resume fodder will be sorely disappointed. The music department for instance, is under-funded and pushed to the side by administration. AP is also pushed incredibly heavily, to the detriment of students. They start the brainwashing in 9th grade with World History, a class that unnecessarily requires several hours of homework each night. They also fail to offer honors physics, so academically inclined students that don't want to take regular or AP are stuck choosing between the two unfavorable options. However, the school does have a good reputation in the local community and with Florida colleges. If you want to be academically challenged (in a way that's half because of bad teachers and half because of difficult course work), then West Shore may be for you.

The coach for the girl's Varsity basketball team is a great coach, and he encourages us to do better. The coach he tells us to learn from the loss and keep trying and push harder. I really hope he stays for a long time to bring out more amazing players out of students who have never played before. He always tries to lift up our spirits when we are down. He is a great coach, a great custodian and all around amazing person.

Westshore girl's basketball coach is bad when he coaches. When he is at school cleaning, he is nice. In the games, there is a big difference between coaching and verbally beating us up. The other day he asked each of us on the spot at practice if we were demoralized. None of us could say anything because we know he will retaliate because we have all seen him do it to other players. Yeah, I agree he does get out done by other coaches and takes it out on us.

I like Westshore''s academics, it really helps us prepare for college but I am posting here because my basketball varsity girls's basketball coach Removed. He verbally beats on us at games, during huddles, between quarters and after the game, including the band app that he uses to communicate to the team. I hope he quits this season. Only one senior returned this year out of 3 or 4. He is kind to the other teacher's kids who are on the team and our point guard even when she turns the ball over 8 times in a game. He is nice when he works as the school's janitor but gets out-coached when we play better teams and takes it out on us.

I''m a student at West Shore and have been there since seventh grade and am over half way finished with my six years there, and there are a lot of great things goong for the school academically. This is a great school for college prep if you are interested in a STEM field. However, their music and performing arts department has no support whatsoever and is extremely lacking. If you want to have a social life outside of school or are looking to be invested in extracirriculars involving sports, this is another big reason not to go. There are no football, baseball, or softball teams at West Shore and if you are involved in a sport, play an instrument or do any other activities that require more than an hour of practice everyday or a few days a week then you would not have a good time here. There is not enough time in the day to go here and take even the least rigorous classes while doing a sport, playing an instrument, or both. Reasons why there isn''t enough time are the teachers assume the students are capable of teacging themselves and just give assignments to kids with no instructions and expect them to be done and the assignments are usually extremely time consuming (granted this is only about a quarter of the teachers that do this). Don''t go here if you do not intend on pursuing a STEM major and if you are invested greatly in extracirriculars. Although this is a college prep school, you shouldn''t be terribly invested in an activity that isn''t academic, although consistently doing it every school year will appeal to colleges, which is important if you''re choosing a college prep school. If you are accepted but you don''t fit this school (or even the demographic since it is mainly privileged white kids who are mainly upper middle class) then DO NOT go here AT ALL because it will look terrible to colleges when you apply and they see you''ve left West Shore after a year or so with mediocre grades to go to a less rigorous school where you make straight A''s.
